Router placement — small changes that make a real difference

Why placement matters as much as settings

Wi-Fi signal degrades every time it passes through a wall, floor, or large object — and some materials are far worse than others. Before touching any router settings, physical placement is often the single biggest lever you have over Wi-Fi consistency, and it costs nothing to fix.

The basics

If your gaming room is far from the router

Quick way to check if placement is the issue

Use your PC's Wi-Fi settings to check signal strength/quality in your gaming spot before and after any change — Windows shows this under Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → your network → signal strength. If you can, temporarily move the router and retest from the same gaming spot to isolate placement as a variable before spending money on new hardware.
